Reducing Noise by Image Averaging

Image noise has always been a problem in digital photography. Most noise reduction techniques currently popular among photographers end up softening the final image as well. Image averaging is one technique that could successfully reduce noise and greatly enhance your photographs without softening it by compromising detail.

How does Image Averaging Work?


Image averaging is a technique commonly used in high end Astro photography and works on the logic that noise in digital images is truly random, thus as one averages more and more images these random fluctuations will gradually even out producing a neat final image. What is actually happening is that by averaging a number of images we are increasing the signal to noise ratio of our image. The image also benefits by the increased bit depth which is otherwise not possible with a single image.

Put simply take multiple shots at high ISO and combine them in Photoshop. We will discuss the concept and also the method in detail; first let’s go through an example.

Assume we have our camera on a solid tripod and it is not moving in between shots. We take two images namely A and B at high ISO so each have random noise in locations  1, 2 and 3 for image A and 4, 5 and 6 for image B. Now when we average the two images, pixel value at each of the locations 1,2,3, 4,5 and 6 are averaged and we now get a final image C which only has half as much noise as each of our  original images namely A and B.

First step is to determine what you requirement is, that dictates the number of shots you need to take, and the formula to remember here is that two averaged images usually produce an image with noise levels comparable to an ISO setting which is half as sensitive.

If you are shooting at 1600 ISO and would like your results to be that of 800 ISO you only need to two pictures and if you wish the shot to be like 100 ISO then you will need to take 4 pictures.

The camera should be set up firmly on a solid tripod so as to prevent camera movement between exposures.

Step 2 – Image Averaging in Photoshop


Load all the images as layers in a single Photoshop document.  The key then is to set right amount of opacity to each layer. Remember each layers opacity determines how much the layer beneath is seen. In order for the blending to be effective it is essential to make sure that each layer contributes equally to the final image. This means that to properly average four images,  one should not set each layers opacity to 25%, instead set the bottom (background) layers opacity to 100%, the layer on top of its to 50%, the one on top of it to 33% and the top layer to 25%.

The following formula could be used to calculate each layer’s opacity.

Layer opacity = 100 * 1/# of layers below +1

Here's a practical example of the technique at work. The picture given below is taken at 100 ISO

Recommended Uses


When should image averaging be preferred as opposed to just taking a longer exposure at a lower ISO?


  1. To reduce noise in the shadows when you wish to bring out details while post processing.
  2. To avoid fixed pattern noise from long exposures
  3. When you work on a camera which does not have a bulb mode and you need to go beyond its longest shutter duration. (for e.g. Most cameras have 30 seconds as its slowest speed, if you don’t have a bulb mode then you cannot go slower than that. But remember 2 30 second shots at ISO 200 is equal to one 60 second shot at 100 ISO.)
  4. For situations where you cannot guarantee interruption free exposures beyond a given time.  E.g. Taking a photo in a public place and wanting low noise, but cannot take long enough exposure because people often pass through the shot, you could take several shots in between passersby.
  5. To selectively freeze motion in low detail, faster moving areas while still retaining low noise in high detail, slower moving areas.


Bird Photography Tips - Using Monopods, Tripods and other types of supports


Bird photography more often than not involves very long focal length lenses which by their very nature are very heavy. And this is where the use of various accessories for stabilizing the camera comes into play.
Before we proceed any further let me make it clear that shooting handheld is the best technique to capture birds (especially in flight). But there are situations when you could use accessories like monopods, bean bags, tripods etc to get better pictures. As a general rule these accessories come in handy when photographing birds that are stationary (like a perched bird).

Bean bags are especially useful if you shoot from your vehicle (using your car as a mobile hide) simply attaching the bean bag on the door will give a solid surface to rest your lens (remember to turn off the engine, else chances are the vibration from the engine will spoil your shots). One other situation when they come in handy is when you are shooting birds lying flat on the ground (to get shots of birds on the ground from the bird’s eye level).

Tripods

Many of us would not be physically able to wield the heavy, long focal length lenses needed to capture the birds for long periods. If that’s the case with you, a viable alternative is to choose a strategic viewpoint and photograph them from a relatively static position.

Tripods are the most difficult accessories to set up; it takes time and effort to properly set up the tripod for shooting birds. And this significantly decreases your chances of getting the shot at all, but if you manage to get them then there is no comparing the image quality, especially so in low light conditions. Tripods are simply the most stable platforms for your camera. However you will find yourselves in trouble if the bird suddenly shifts positions. To make the most out of tripods get a Gimbal Head which will let overcome the difficulties of shooting with a tripod to a great extent.

Tripods could even be used when you are shooting from a vehicle (it requires placing your tripod legs in some funny angles though. They could be very helpful if you need to watch the bird for a really long time to capture action/behavior/expression etc. (simple set your focus right and wait for the bird to strike an interesting pose). One other situation when tripods could be used is when you know in advance where the bird is going to be, for example when you know that the bird is going to come to a perch using a tripod will give you stunning shots as the bird flies in and then takes off.

Tripod is also essential if you intend to set up remote cameras, triggers, flash units etc and capture the birds to get really stunning (staged) images.

Monopods


Monopods are much easier to carry around and use than tripods, but they are not that stable, however they could be help you support the weight of your equipment when you need to hold the bird in focus for a long duration. One significant disadvantage of monopod is that they force your camera to move in arcs that does not match either the birds flight pattern or the natural body movements of humans.

The choice whether to shoot handheld or use any support is totally dependent upon the conditions and the photographer.

Sometimes simple techniques like leaning against a wall or a post will help stabilize the shot, or you can use any element already present in the vicinity as support.

Tips for Photographing Shorebirds

Shorebirds are mostly long and slender birds with large flat feet, thin long legs and elongated beaks. The Oxford dictionary defines shorebirds as those birds that frequent the shore. Their diet consists of fish, crustaceans, insects and other small organisms found along a shore, in mud or shallow water. So they are mainly confined to the narrow strips of shore that lines the dams, lakes, rivers, wetlands and oceans where their food is plentiful.

Shorebirds irrespective of the species; and regardless of whether they're alone or in massive groups, make excellent photographic subjects. Photographing shorebirds going about their business of running back and forth with the waves, rummaging through seaside debris searching for food, just sitting in a group asleep with their heads tucked in and a leg pulled up etc is very rewarding and could give you some wonderful shots.

In this article we will discuss how to photograph shore birds, like any other wild subject photographing shore birds also has some challenges and knowing the right method could help you skip most of the mistakes beginners make in their first few unsuccessful attempts to photograph them.

They are typically larger birds, are easier to find and are often found in large groups.

Unlike many other wildlife subjects, shorebirds are very predictable and thus knowing a bit about them will help you get much better shots.

Find the direction the wind is coming from, as birds tend to take off and land into the wind.

The toughest part in shorebird photography is to get close enough to them to have them large in the frame and not appear as a mere dot in a vast landscape.

Only include the full reflection of a bird in the water in your photo when the water is clear and when you have a perfect reflection.

 It is better to get into position before the break of dawn. The angle and quality of light makes a huge difference in your photographs. The beautiful palettes of colors of any bird are best appreciated in soft light, when the sun is at a low angle, and with the sun directly behind the photographer. The soft light will reveal subtle detail in all the color tones while the front lit light will illuminate every part of the bird visible in the photo. Also during that time, there is less chance of strong winds and currents.

Try to isolate a single bird or group of birds from the rest. This will create a strong focal point in your photo.

Avoid having other birds in the background behind the bird you are shooting. This might be difficult when there are many birds like is often the case along a shore, but if you wait patiently you will be able to get individual shots as the birds move in and out of the group.

Capture Action/Behavior shots. Wait for the bird to do something interesting. They often stretch their wings, or indicate that they will take to flight.

Only include the full reflection of a bird in the water in your photo when the water is clear and when you have a perfect reflection.

Don't photograph birds facing away from you. It's best when the bird is tilted slightly towards you.

You generally want to arrive when the tide is out (and the birds are off feeding) this will cause less stress if you are in position and waiting for the birds to return as the tide starts to come in than arriving when the birds are already at the roost.

Tips for Approaching Shorebirds

For a bird photographer, approaching the subject poses the greatest challenge. At the same time, he has also to keep the background in mind. While photographing the shore-birds, it is not that difficult to spot the birds, as there is virtually no hindrance between the photographer and the birds. But, this in turn creates another awkward situation. The birds too detect us easily and feel quite threatened as we approach them. The birds are quite wary about the height of the approaching threat. The taller the object, the greater will be their uneasiness.

Wear clothes that camouflage you well with the landscape.

Wear clothing that you can afford to get dirty :-).

The birds are more wary of camera equipment, especially large / long lenses than the humans.

Instead of walking straight to them, try getting down on one's belly and kind of crawling towards the birds. This not only makes approaching the birds easier but also lets you shoot from the bird’s eye level producing much more pleasing compositions.

Approach slowly, don’t make any sudden or jerky movements, move few feet at a time, rest and then move.

When you get close to the birds say approximately 30 feet or so, you could sense the first wave of uneasiness in some of the birds. If this happens, stop all movement, stay low and wait till the birds settle down, it might take 5 to 15 minutes for this to happen. But if you wait patiently you will gain the birds confidence and they won’t fly off when you approach closer. The closer you get the greater will be the waiting time it takes the birds to settle down.

Shorebirds are more leery of creatures approaching from the shore than those which might approach from the water. Photographers have had success actually getting into the (shallow) water and approaching shorebirds from that side.

Once you manage to get close enough to them to shoot, slowly set up your camera, compose your shots and take pictures, there is no need to hurry, if nothing unnatural happens the birds are going to be at the same spot the whole day.

If you gain the confidence of the birds they will always return and land near you even if they are disturbed by a passing person a jogger or a cyclist. Also in some cases the birds might even move closer to you during the natural course of their feeding.

Photographing Birds in Flight – Master Focusing Technique


Camera shake and inaccurate focus are the major reasons that cause soft or blurry images when photographing birds in flight. While camera shake could be handled by using image stabilized lenses, shooting at higher speeds and by better stabilizing the camera, achieving accurate focus consistently requires the use of right focusing technique and a lot of practice.

There is a reason why most advanced lenses feature a full time manual focus feature (it lets you focus manually even if the lens is set to AF mode). Most lenses perform well and lock on to a subject in a fraction of a second if the subject is almost in focus.

For example:

If you are trying to focus on a bird flying about 25 meters away with your lens pre-focused to say 20 – 30 meters range, the lens will attain focus very fast. As the lens only need to search a small distance and not go through its entire range to find the subject. However if you try to focus the same bird which is 25 meters away when your lens focus is set to 5 meters chances are the lens will take a really long time searching the entire range and by the time the bird will be long gone.

You might have experienced this when you take a picture of some nearby object and then try to shoot something which is very far.

The trick to overcome this issue is to focus manually on the bird, you need not try to attain exact sharp focus, but focus on the general direction of the bird and then let the auto focus do the rest of the job of fine tuning the focus and locking on to the subject. So do the major focus changes manually and let auto focus do the micro adjustments needed. This technique works all the time with all sorts of equipment; from the most basic of zoom lenses and camera bodies to the most advanced gear ever produced.

Focus Limiter


Many of the modern lenses allow the photographer to limit the range of focus. They have a button dedicated to this usually called the Focus Limiter.

Most cameras when they can't lock on focus will have the lens search through the range of focus distances until some detail is detected; this is sometimes called "hunting". A focus limiter simply restricts the range of distances the camera will attempt to focus at. Because auto-focus isn’t very good at quickly searching the entire focal range for the subject, limiting the focus range improves both the speed of focus and the accuracy (assuming you are only interested in subjects within the range you have selected).

For example:

If you are shooting birds that are very far away from your position, you can safely set the focus limiter to ignore the closer range and thus improve the auto focus speed and accuracy.

However photographers are divided in their opinion whether it is a useful feature or not. There is no doubt that limiting focusing range will improve focusing speed and accuracy in the set range. But there are a couple of drawbacks to this approach.

Firstly if you use your lens with focus limiter set to distant focus, say 20 meters to infinity. You will find yourselves helpless if a bird suddenly moves/lands very close to you or flies towards you. Unless you are not able to quickly locate the focus limiter button and switch it to focus at full range, your lens will not be able to lock focus and you will miss the shot.

Secondly letting the lens do the range searching and finding the bird in the scene is not the ideal way to focus quickly on birds. Searching the entire focal range is not what lenses do best, instead as we mentioned earlier in this article, do the major focusing manually and let the auto focus do the micro adjustments. Adopting this technique not only makes your focusing more fast and accurate but also lets you use your lens with focusing range set to full at all times.

Focus Confirmation Signals

Most cameras give two types of focus confirmation signals, one visual and the other audible. The focus confirmation light in the viewfinder will give a visual confirmation while a beep sound will give you an audible confirmation. Wildlife photographers are often advised to turn off the beep sound as it is an artificial sound and can easily spook the animals. But in case of bird photography the soft noise will only bother the most shy of birds. Sometimes it could even work to your advantage as the birds when hearing the sound become curious and turn their head in your direction to investigate. So it’s mostly a personal choice, if you find it annoying, or if it seems to alert the birds of your presence turn it off else leave it on.

Manual focusing is not one of the strong points of many photographers who took up photography in the digital era. With the advancements in auto focus systems manual focusing has been completely ignored and many have never even tried it once. But to a wildlife photographer mastering manual focus has many advantages:

  1. It lets you work with very high quality lenses (MF lenses which are now discarded and is available for very little money) if you are on a budget.
  2. Manual focusing works better in certain situations, especially when there are many elements present in the scene (when the bird is in a cluttered environment) which the camera may try to focus.
  3. Then there is the advantage that practicing with manual focus will vastly improve your eye-brain-hand coordination which will result in vastly improving your success rate with both manual focus and auto focus lenses.


In this article we will discuss couple of techniques for shooting birds in flight that have been used by photographers for ages, even before AF lenses were first introduced.  These techniques could be practiced on manual focus lenses or with auto focus lenses set to manual mode.

Before we get to the actual technique there are few things you should know. Manual focus lenses traditionally had larger (broader / wider) focusing rings with a smooth motion. The cameras during those periods also had focusing screens optimized for manual focusing. So trying to do it with cameras and lenses designed for auto focus will be a bit more difficult, but with practice it will become much easier.

If you plan on using manual focusing on a regular basis, then it will be wise to invest in a precision focusing screen for your DSLR like the Canon Eg-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen For Canon EOS 5D-Mark II Cameras. Different cameras make use of different focusing screens so buy one that matches your camera make and model.

Technique of Photographing Birds in Flight Using Manual Focus Lenses

When photographing large birds which have a relatively slow flight one could simply use the focusing ring to manually focus on the bird as it flies. This technique is not practical for some flight shots but perfectly usable for certain others like a hovering raptor or a heron flying horizontally across the frame.

The second technique is to anticipate the distance through with the bird would fly and setting your focus before hand by focusing on any object approximately the same distance away from you. This technique works very well even with birds which have a fast flight if the birds fly through the point of focus. But the catch here is that you should know a little bit about the birds and their behavior so as to anticipate the movement of the bird and set focus accordingly. Continuous shooting combined with the use of relatively narrow apertures to increase depth of field will help improve your chances of getting your perfect shot.

One major advantage these techniques have is to completely avoid one of the biggest problems in flight photography; camera locking on to some background element rather than the main subject.

20 Tips to Improve Focusing Accuracy and Sharpness in your Images


Perhaps the most common complaint photographers have ever raised is that “my pictures are not sharp enough” or “the focusing system is not up to the mark”. And near about 100% of those who have these issues attribute it to fault in their equipment. Although in some instances they are right and the equipment is indeed the culprit; but in majority of the cases it is not the equipment but lack of understanding or improper shooting technique that are causing issues. In this article we will discuss some basic facts and certain shooting techniques that every DSLR user should be aware of which will help them get the best out of their equipment in terms of Focus and Sharpness.

1. Clean Your Lenses and Sensor


Dirt on camera sensor and lenses could adversely affect the performance of your camera by making focusing difficult, regularly clean both the front and back elements of your lenses and also make sure there is no dust on your sensor for best performance.

2. Change / Remove Lens Filters

Cheap low quality filters could reduce the sharpness of your lens, what’s the logic of putting a 10$ filter in front of a 1000$ lens, you will end up with image quality equivalent of a 10$ lens. Even good quality filters deteriorate over time so make sure the filters you mount on your lens are high quality filters in perfect condition else remove the filter from the lens.

3. Get to Know Your Viewfinder


Ever wondered why there are so many squares and rectangles in the viewfinder well they are all focus points and they are not all the same. Most cameras have 9 – 11 focus points but recent models are featuring 64 +, the general rule is the more the better. Remember not all of the focus points could be selected for focusing as some of them function only as assist points.

Rectangle Focus Points – focus points represented by both horizontal and vertical rectangles are single plane focus points. They work only on lines of contrast at a 90 degree orientation. So horizontal rectangles are to be used for focusing on vertical subjects and vertical rectangles are to be used to focus on horizontal subjects.

Square Focus Points – focus points represented by a square are Cross points and they are superior to single points which are represented by rectangles because they work either way (can focus on both vertical and horizontal lines).

Use this information to align your subject with the right type of focus point to get fast and accurate focus. Also keep in mind the actual sensor area covered by a focus point is at least twice as large as the size of the rectangle shown in the viewfinder. So within that area the camera will try to focus on the area of greatest contrast.

4. Use only the Center Focus Point


Yes I know it does not make sense, if the camera has 64 focus points why not use them all, will it not help make focusing faster? The answer is both yes and no, if your intention is to attain focus fast then using all focusing points will certainly help you achieve that. But if your intention is to focus on the right part of the scene then its better you shift to center focus point only and use the focus point to focus precisely where you want. Center focus point is the most powerful and fastest focus point in any camera; it is also a cross type focus point.

For example imagine you are trying to shoot a scene with 5 different elements in it; in all point focus mode the camera does not know which one is important to you and will generally focus on the element that is closest to the camera. if that is not what you wanted you will have to release shutter button and try again this could be very frustrating, instead shift to center focus point only, point the center point at the element you need to be in focus, lock focus and recompose the scene. 

5. Adjust your Diopter


Each person’s eye sight is different and so camera manufactures have provided a way to adjust the focus of your cameras eyepiece to match that of your eyesight. Without a properly calibrated diopter you will not be able to judge whether you subject is in focus or not. Read more about Why and How to Use the Diopter Adjustment on Your DSLR Camera.

6. Use the Correct Focus Mode


Dig you DSLR’s users manual and read the section of focus modes. This one is important, in general most DSLR cameras have 2 or 3 different focus modes. But in my experience only 2 of them works well.

One Shot (Canon)  / Single Servo Mode (Nikon) – use this mode for best results on subjects that are stationary. You will get both visual and audio confirmation on when focus is locked (depending on camera settings), the shutter will not fire if the camera is unable to achieve focus.

AI Servo (Canon) / Continuous Servo Mode (Nikon) – use this mode to shoot moving subjects, the camera will follow the subject as it moves across the frame, focus is set at the time of release of the shutter and the camera will take a picture irrespective of whether or not focus has been achieved or not.

7. Proper Focusing Technique


Many lenses struggle to focus when switching from near to far focus or vice versa. This happens because the lens stars to hunt for focus from one end (near or far) and need to travel all the way to the other to actually find the subject. To make things easier some lenses have a function called focus limiter that allows you to limit the area that the lens need to look for this could speed up things quite a bit.

For example Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens has a focus limiter that could be set from 1.8m to infinity or 6.8m to infinity so if you know that you are trying to focus on a subject that is far away you could set the focus limiter to 6.8m – infinity mode and make things much faster.

Another focusing technique is to manually focus the lens in the general direction so as to get the subject in acceptably sharp and then take auto focus do the precision fine tuning. This is much easier on lenses that have full time manual override function.

If manual focusing is not to your liking there is one tip that could help you auto focus better. Instead of pressing down the shutter button and keeping it pressed till the lens acquires focus, make it a two stage process, first half click to focus the lens in the general direction, release shutter button and half click again to fine tune and lock focus. This technique works because it helps minimize problems caused by inertia or slops in mechanics which cause the lens to overshoot the point of focus.

8. Understanding Subjects that are Difficult to Focus


Auto focus systems have evolved over the years and now deliver quite acceptable performance but they do tend to struggle with certain subjects such as the following:

  • Low-contrast subjects. (ex. blue sky, solid-color walls, etc.)
  • Subjects in low light.
  • Extremely backlit reflective subjects. (ex. car with a reflective body)
  • Overlapping near and far objects. (ex. animal in a cage)
  • Repetitive patterns. (ex. Skyscraper windows, computer keyboards, etc.)


When faced with such subjects / situations, do either of the following:

  • Focus on an object at the same distance as the subject and lock the focus. Recompose as needed and take your picture. 
  • Set the lens focus mode switch to <MF> and focus manually.


9. Where Should I Set My Focus?

General rule of focus is to set your focus at the most important part of the subject / scene. Have your sharpest focus on the area that you want to draw the viewer's attention to.  For photographs of people and animals it’s the eyes, for landscapes with a foreground element it’s the foreground element, for landscapes without one set your focus at the Hyper Focal Distance.

10. Use Focus Lock Correctly


Focus, lock and then recompose is the most popular shooting technique. However bear in mind that if not used correctly this could cause focus errors due to lens movement (the arc angle) causing the camera to subject distance to shift slightly. This issue is most obvious when shooting macro and for macro photography I suggest you focus manually rather than depending on the cameras auto focus mechanism.

Some photographers suggest using the focus point closest to the subject so as to minimize this but in my opinion (especially if you are using a lens with full time manual focus) it is better to focus and recompose with your center focus point and if you find necessary (when using very shallow depth of field like f/1.4 or f/2.8) fine tune the focus manually. This will not be necessary in most cases however you should be aware of this and double check your focus after recomposing.

11. Don’t be Afraid to Focus Manually


Manual focusing has always been the best way to ensure accurate focus. But many photographers especially the ones who picked up photography in the digital age are very skeptical about this, they will shoot in manual mode if need be but does not entertain the idea of focusing manually. In fact manual focusing has never been so easy. The live view function coupled with the ability to zoom the view to say 5x or even 10x makes focusing manually much easier and precise.

12. Depth of Field is no Substitute for Good Focus


Irrespective of the depth of field in an image there is only one point of focus, you can only marginally improve the feel of sharpness by increasing depth of field but it could never substitute good focus.

13. Shutter Speed and Image Sharpness

Camera shake is one other factor that could lead to loss of image sharpness, when shooting stationary subjects the general rule for handholding is to use a shutter speed that is 1 over the focal length of the lens used. So if you are using a 200mm lens make sure you have at least 1/200 as the shutter speed. But this is not applicable when shooting moving subjects, to capture moving subjects sharp one should either use fast shutter speeds capable of completely freezing the movement or use flash to freeze it. 14. Turn On Image Stabilization / Vibration Reduction


If you are using a lens that has image stabilization feature (IS on Canon or VR on Nikon) turning it on could help you get sharper pictures while shooting handheld. Some cameras also offer stabilization at the sensor. However remember to turn it off when shooting on a tripod else it will influence the picture quality adversely.

When it comes to keeping camera steady nothing could match the versatility of a tripod. But most photographers are put off from using one due to the extra effort of carrying it with them all the time and the time and effort needed to set up your shot. However it could help better compose the frame, and eliminate camera shake completely.

16. Focus and Sharpness are two Different Things


Focus and sharpness are two entirely different things, it should be understood that you can have a perfectly sharp out of focus picture. And you cannot make an out of focus picture in focus by sharpening.

17. Lens Correction Data


Sometimes your equipment could be the real culprit; a particular lens might be consistently focusing a few millimeters in front or behind the intended focus area. In such cases most modern cameras have the ability to make an adjustment in the camera to fix the issue. The camera allows you to enter lens correction data for up to 20 different lenses (depending upon camera model) and when the camera identifies a lens for which the correction data is entered is mounted it sets the focus accordingly so as to get accurate focus.

A simple home experiment could tell you whether or not your lens is focusing at the right point or is it off. Set camera on a tripod, use the widest aperture allowed by your lens and take a picture of a ruler places at an angle of 45 degrees to the camera. Autofocus on 5” mark and you will be able to tell where the focus area actually is when you look at the picture in your computer screen whether it is precisely at the 5” mark or is it off and if it’s off then by what amount.

18. Add More Light to the Scene


Cameras auto focus needs light to work properly and often its lack of enough light that causes issues. If your camera has an AF assist beam do enable it, similarly most branded external flash units have an infra red focus assist beam to make focusing easier, so even if you are not using flash you could use it to make focusing easier (turn of flash firing in flash menu). Alternatively a torch or a head lamp or virtually any light source could be used to throw light on to your subject to focus.

19. Ensure Correct Exposures

Sharpness of an image is determined by a line of contrast; so if your picture is underexposed or have dull lighting, an image will not appear sharp even if the focus and everything else is right. Use your camera's inbuilt histogram feature to make sure you have your exposures right. Modern DSLR cameras have both RGB and Luminescence histogram to help photographers with exposure decisions.

20. Check Sharpness by Zooming in on Your LCD Screen

Always check your images for sharpness by zooming in to 100% on your LCD screen; if there is any blur at all it will be visible when zoomed in 100% so you could immediately re-shoot the picture.

Focus and Image Sharpness are two of the most important technical aspects in photography which sets apart great photography from mediocre work. so spare no effort to make sure your photographs are as sharp as possible with your current equipment.
