One very important point photographers should know about shooting in RAW format is that, when you shoot in RAW format some pictures take up a lot more space on the memory card than others. File size depends on various factors in the scene you capture including light levels, tones, the amount of contrast, dominant colors etc. The amount of information needed to be stored is different for different subjects/scenes.

But when digital cameras calculate the number of shots that could be shot of a card, (number of shots left) they do it based on average file size. So trying to fill up every last bit of space on that memory card with data could potentially corrupt the card and make you lose all your shots in that card.
Better switch to a new memory card when there is still space left for at least a couple of shots to be on the safer side.
