Android App News - Facebook close to launching its Slingshot, a Snapchat chat application -

 

Persistent rumors are now circulating about a new Facebook app called 'Slingshot', a Snapchat like chat app that allows chatting and sending media files that the will be erased seconds after sending. The hugely popular Snapchat app received buying bids from Facebook and (reportedly) Google but refused them all. Even though Snapchat's main feature, the one that erases media files and messages after conversation have been proved to not always work, Snapchat still remains popular with tens of millions of monthly downloads.

 

Social media is moving these days away from conventional desktop based social media apps such as Facebook and Google+ towards mobile centered social media apps such as Whatsapp, Snapchat and other instant chat apps such as Line. This trend is evident in the 19 billion dollar acquisition by Facebook of Whatsapp and the failed attempts to buy Snapchat.

As of this time, it's still not sure if Facebook will really release Sligshot but if it will, it will probably be a totally independent app such as Whatsapp today and Facebook Messenger. What is certain is the greater emphasis social media puts on the mobile users, especially concerning the younger generation of users who have readily embraced instant messages apps, Whatspp and Snapchat included

Android App News - Will iTunes be available on Android ?

 

Persistent rumors are circulating about Apple making its iTunes music and media streaming services available to Android users. Till now, these services were only available for iPhone, iPad and Mac users but the current rumors suggest Apple is considering making these services available through apps for Android users.

Of course this makes sense since Apple will be able to bill Android users who will consume media through these media streaming services. There are other media and music streaming services already available for Android, from Spotify to Pandora (radio streaming) and Google's own Google Play Music.

However, one of Apple's strong suits is it's being a closed farm, with media, devices, apps and contents all being compatible only with Apple's products. This is one of the things which Apple uses in order to try to preserve its market share of devices such as tablets and iPhones.

No doubt we the users will benefit from iTunes availability on Android but it remains to be seen what Apple will decide. On a side note, we would also benefit from Apple remaining a strong company which keeps making Google and Samsung and all other Android manufacturers strive to provide us with the best apps, operating system updates and devices they are able to produce.

Android App News - WhatsApp adds a New Privacy Update

 

WhatsApp adds a new privacy update feature that allows the user to choose who can see information about the user. Options include ability to select who can see when the user was last seen on WhatsApp, who can see the user's profile image and which contacts can see the user's status updates.

Though these changes are certainly welcomed and much needed, it is an open question whether they are connected to the recent 19 billion dollar acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook.

Facebook has faced privacy issues for years and has made repeated changes in order to accommodate increasing demands on privacy from its users. It may be now WhatsApp is started to address privacy issues because of Facebook's influence.

However, Facebook or no Facebook, WhatsApp previously allowed a user to see another's users profile picture, status and when last it used WhatsApp even if that user did not confirm the first user's credentials. Of course, this left open the option for people to find out information about other people they had no business knowing, just because they found out their phone number.

Remember to update your app and check you WhatsApp settings to turn these options off!

Android App News - WeChat update 5.0 is here. This update brings with it a lot of new stickers and some new group features. However, there seems to be some problems with the update as well, as some of our reviewers experienced some problems with notifications of new messages that don't appear till AFTER they open the app itself.

In addition, one or two reviewers complained that they can't open pics sent to them by their contacts.

However, the vast majority of our reviewers worked with the new update flawlessly. We hope WeChat quickly fixes the few small issues some of our reviewers complained about.
